Concrete & Electrical Scope Gaps: 7 Items GCs and ECs Should Coordinate Before Mobilization




On a commercial project, some of the most expensive problems happen between scopes—not necessarily within them.


Concrete may be clearly shown on one set of plans and electrical on another, but someone still has to coordinate the trench, conduit locations, embeds, light pole bases, equipment pads, backfill, and concrete restoration.


When those responsibilities aren't clearly defined before mobilization, small scope gaps can quickly turn into RFIs, change orders, rework, and schedule delays.


For general contractors and electrical contractors in Nashville and Middle Tennessee, here are seven items worth coordinating before crews hit the site.


1. Who Owns the Trenching?

This sounds simple, but it should never be assumed.


Before mobilization, establish who is responsible for:

  • Excavation and trenching

  • Spoils removal

  • Bedding material

  • Backfill

  • Compaction

  • Concrete or asphalt restoration


For ECs, having this figured out early also helps ensure the trench is ready when the electrical crew needs to install conduit—not several days before or after.


2. Who Sets Conduit and Sleeves?

Concrete and electrical scopes frequently intersect at foundations, slabs, equipment pads, light pole bases, and duct banks.


The project team should know who is supplying and installing conduit, who is responsible for sleeves, and who verifies locations before concrete is placed.


Once concrete is poured, fixing a missed penetration becomes significantly more difficult.


3. Light Pole Base Details

Light pole bases are another common coordination point between the EC and concrete subcontractor.


Before excavation begins, confirm items such as:

  • Base diameter and depth

  • Finished elevation

  • Anchor bolt pattern

  • Reinforcement requirements

  • Conduit quantity and orientation

  • Pole and fixture requirements

  • Location relative to curb, sidewalk, parking, and utilities


Getting these details settled early helps prevent a completed base from becoming a future rework item.


4. Equipment Pad Requirements

Transformers, generators, switchgear, mechanical equipment, and other site equipment may require concrete pads with very specific dimensions and elevations.


GCs and ECs should make sure the latest approved equipment information matches the concrete scope.


A pad built from an outdated detail can create problems when the equipment arrives on site.


5. Backfill and Compaction

Trenching isn't finished when the conduit goes in.


Backfill and compaction become especially important when a utility trench crosses beneath a sidewalk, parking area, equipment pad, curb, or other finished surface.


Poor restoration below the surface can eventually lead to settlement and damaged concrete above it.


Clearly defining responsibility for backfill and compaction helps protect the work that follows.


6. Concrete Removal and Restoration

On renovation, tenant improvement, and existing-site projects, electrical work may require sawcutting or removing existing concrete to reach underground utilities.


Before work begins, determine:

  • Who handles sawcutting and demolition?

  • Who removes the material?

  • Who restores the subgrade?

  • Who dowels into existing concrete if required?

  • Who pours and finishes the replacement concrete?


For a GC, assigning these responsibilities early can mean coordinating fewer separate crews once work begins.


7. Inspection and Scheduling Responsibilities

Even perfectly installed work can create a delay if the next step happens before the required inspection.


The GC, EC, and site/concrete subcontractor should establish the sequence before mobilization:


Excavate → Install → Inspect → Backfill → Compact → Pour/Restore


That sequence may vary by project, but the important part is making sure everyone knows when their crew is expected and what has to happen before the next trade takes over.


Fewer Scope Gaps. Fewer Headaches.

The best time to solve a concrete/electrical coordination issue is before equipment and crews arrive on site.


For GCs, that means clearer scopes and fewer subcontractor handoffs.


For ECs, it means having trenching, pole bases, pads, and restoration ready when they're needed.


And for the overall project, it means fewer surprises between underground electrical work and finished concrete.
