Why hot-weather planning matters in Nashville & Middle Tennessee


When temperatures push into the mid-90s (or higher) in Middle Tennessee, concrete work becomes a logistics and quality challenge—especially on tighter Nashville-area sites where access, staging, and stacked trades already compress your pour window.


Hot weather doesn’t just make crews uncomfortable. It can:

  • Speed up set time (your finishing window shrinks)

  • Increase the risk of plastic shrinkage cracking

  • Make it harder to maintain consistent slump and air

  • Dry the surface too quickly if wind and sun are high

  • Create schedule risk when early starts, inspections, and access are not aligned

In summer, most pours do not fail because the concrete “won’t cure.” They fail because the project cannot place, finish, and begin curing fast enough to stay ahead of heat, sun, and wind.


If you do not align the start time + delivery plan + finishing plan + curing plan up front, you can end up with:

  • Burned finish, surface checking, or crusting

  • Random cracking and callbacks

  • Rework that disrupts other trades

  • Delays because placement must slow down to protect quality


What “hot weather” means (practically)


Hot-weather risk typically shows up when:

  • Air temperatures are high (mid-90s and up)

  • Concrete arrives warm (especially later in the day)

  • Wind is up and humidity is low (surface moisture evaporates quickly)

  • You have large flatwork placements (slabs, paving, sidewalks)

  • You have thin sections (curb/sidewalk) that lose moisture quickly


Even when the forecast looks “fine,” the combination of heat + wind + direct sun can create a bad finishing day.


The 8 most common hot-weather failure points (and how to prevent them)


1) The start time is too late

Midday placements in Nashville heat are where problems stack.

Prevent it:

  • Schedule early starts (often first light)

  • Coordinate access, layout, and inspections so crews are not waiting on site readiness


2) No one owns the hot-weather plan

Prevent it: Assign ownership in precon: who provides water, fogging/evaporation control, shade or wind breaks, curing compound, and protection.

  • Confirm hot-weather mix options with ready-mix (within spec): retarder, mid-range water reducer, chilled water/ice (if available)

  • Confirm realistic truck spacing based on finishing capacity

Hot weather tempts crews to add water or overwork the surface to “keep it open.” That can weaken the surface and increase dusting/scaling risk.

7) Curing is delayed

In near-100° heat, curing is not optional—it is the difference between a durable surface and a callback.

  • Protect edges and thin sections aggressively


8) Conditions are not monitored or documented

If you do not measure, you are guessing.

72 hours out: align on start time, deliveries, finishing, and curing

  • Confirm placement start time (early)

  • Confirm finishing manpower and sequencing

  • Confirm curing method and materials (compound, wet cure, blankets as needed)

  • Confirm ready-mix plan and any allowed hot-weather adjustments

  • Confirm testing plan (slump, air, cylinders) and who is responsible


48 hours out: lock logistics
